BEFORE, SCALES

November 2024

Cotton, Linen, Wool
50” x 75”
Before, Scales is the beginning of a longer-term project working into the place the overshot weave structure holds in the historical weaving canon. Overshot weavings, especially coverlets, and the motifs often featured within them, harken back to a specfic time and place in American craft history. That association is not only historically innacurate but paints a sanitized, white colonial image of Appalachia. Even in contemporary weaving, the overshot drafts most often utilized are specifically chosen for their “historical” aesthetics.

Designed intentionally with contemporary aesthetics, composition, and techniques, Before, Scales is my first attempt at pushing overshot in a direction I haven’t seen before. I wanted to utilize a structre I find fascinating to attempt to do something new.

Technical information:
Warp/Tabby Weft: 8/2 cottolin, sett at 20epi
Pattern Weft: Fingering weight wool yarn (Harrisville Shetland)
9-block Overshot draft, woven on a 24-shaft AVL Compudobby Loom in a single panel.
