Handwoven handspun and dyed wool + cotton, basswood, hardware.

39” x 56”
Gutwrencher is the first large scale work into the conceptual base I've been exploring for the past few months. Using handwoven overshot cloth as a direct analog for the queer body, I explore beyond the limits of the physical form in pursuit of a utopian constructed "body". Overshot is a weave structure with an inherently unstable history, and its largely invented place in the Western weaving canon mimics the invented categories queer people are forced to exist within. In this moment of incredible restriction to queer self-expression, I want to explore the possibilities in alterations/augmentations/modifications beyond the limits of our human bodies, what potential is there in gutting/flaying/amputation in pursuit of a utopian constructed form? I'm aiming to break down the preciousness of handwoven cloth and by extension, the flesh of the bodies it represents. The loom is my operating theater and I aim to see how far I can push the forms I create under the shuttle's knife.

Technical information:Warp/Tabby Weft: Georgia Yarn Company 10/2 unmercerized cotton
Pattern Wefts: Hand dyed/spun 2-ply Cheviot wool (blue), Maurice Brassard Blue Mountain Wool (red)

Sizes vary
	As my
weavings become more explicitly bodies, explicitly queer bodies,
cutting, sewing, altering, and mending them becomes an attempt at
resistance through bodily autonomy. While I grapple with the implications and commitment of modifications to my own flesh, my weavings have become a site where I can experiment with acts of bodily autonomy. They are for me, but also serve as, hopefully, sort of call to action to realize and exercise one's own bodily autonomy, especially as queer people.

This coverlet was woven based on a sample in Burnham and Burnham’s Keep Me Warm One Night, found during research into overshot weaving slightly outside the traditional American canon. It features a sunburst motif that was not extremely popular and is not seen often in modern overshot work.
This piece wass mostly woven as a technical exploration of large scale, multi-paneled pieces, but also served as a jumping off point into the research that resulted in Before, Scales came out of.

A piece of cloth woven using Recording Interface for Pair Of Weavers. The weaving documents the loom’s debut at the 2024 VCUArts GDES Senior Exhibition. I sat and wove with 26 people over the course of the week, and this cloth is a direct translation of the time spent and the conversations had with each of them.
The cloth is a proof of concept of the loom’s ability to act as a tool for capturing physical records of place and community, and served as a learning experience for all involved.

Recording Interface is a tool. It’s a custom built floor loom, designed to allow two weavers to simultaneously weave a piece of cloth together. Stemming from exploration into the record keeping potential of handwoven cloth, the loom aims to allow a piece of cloth to document the interaction of two people. The cloth becomes a physical record of their time spent together.Envisioned originally as a tool for creating archives of places and communities, the loom made its debut at the VCUArts GDES Capstone Show, OPEN HOUSE in May 2024. Over the course of the show I sat and wove with 26 people to create a collaborative piece of cloth.
Completed as the capstone project for the completion of my BFA in Graphic Design at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts.

Acknowledgements:
This project could not have happened without the hands of Annie Evelyn, Justin Ricardo Cockrell, Elsie D’Agostino,

Mishari Al-Duwaisan, and so so many more. The loom was designed with heavy reference to the 4-Harness Jack Loom plans outlined in Loom Construction (1978) by Jeri Hjert and Paul Von Rosenstiel
Thank you also to Eileen Morley for letting me bounce this project off you for an entire year, and for sitting with me for a while and weaving while being photographed.

	Hand-processed, spun and dyed wool16” x 8’
A further exploration into the technical side of wool processing into cloth, this scarf was created from a locally sourced sheep fleece. Processed from raw, entirely by hand by me.

Named for Possum, the sheep that graciously grew this fleece for me, this scarf also serves as an exploration into the stories and memories that come to be held by objects as a result of the process of their creation. Every single step of this scarf’s creation had to be intentionally considered and executed. As such, the scarf serves almost as a record of its own creation and holds the memory of every step in the process.
The scarf can stand alone as a usable object, which is entirely by design. But, it also serves as a jumping off point for a deeper cosideration into object as record, something that I have been exploring in the time since finishing it.
Technical information:
Warp/Weft: handspun 2-ply merino wool
Sett: 15epi

2/2 twill

	Two machine-pieced cotton quilts
5’ x 7.5’ each
Made in the immediate aftermath of my 16-year-old brother’s suicide in Febuary 2023, these two quilts are designed from a tesselation of Nate’s Rubik’s cube in the state that he left it when he died.
Grappling heavily with the fact that I did not see or speak to my brother for months before he passed, I have been fascinated by the few remaining objects I have that hold tangible evidence of his touch. His Rubik’s cube being one. He was able to solve the puzzle in about 2 minutes if he tried, but had left the cube unsolved upon his death.
Created at the size of the floorplan of the room in my childhood home that he died in, these quilts serve as an immediate reaction to learning of his death: the wish that I could have done just one thing to change the catastrophic outcome of the worst moment of his life. In the processing over the next couple weeks I quickly came to the conclusion that I needed to make objects that could hold him, could cushion him, could surround him and could keep him warm. These quilts are the first iteration of what will doubtlessly be an extended and evolving project.
This project has taken up a massive majority of my time over the past couple months and I would like to thank all of those who helped bring these incredibly important pieces to completion: Caroline Branch, Roman Ross, Eileen Morley, Justin Cockrell, Hillary Waters Fayle and most of all, HH Hiaasen.
Shown at the Spring 2023 iteration of To Keep You Warm at the Institute Of Contemporary Art at VCU, on nicole killian’s between a book and a soft place and Riley Hooker’s Sit(uation)

Two cotton and wool handwoven bandanas
22” x 22”
These two bandanas were woven while thinking about the relationships that I keep in my life, specfically the things that I give to and hope to recieive from others in those relationships. Woven with lots of heavy handed references to the hanky code, as one might imagine, the colors are taken directly from the various bandanas in the code. However, the hand dyed colors do not represent the kinks in the code directly, but the emotional/relational concepts that I associate with those kinks.
The two bandanas are woven out of primarily 20/2 unmercerized cotton, set at 30epi.
Left bandana – 8-shaft overshot, “Whig Rose and Lover’s Knot” by Mary Meigs-Atwater
Right bandana – 2/2 twill, custom tartan
